Journalism / Freelancing/Teaching
My journalism credentials begin circa 1998. I decided early on I wanted to write for a living, so after taking the only journalism course my tiny high school offered, I started volunteering for the area newspaper, which came out once a week. I wrote up sports scores and features ranging from new principals to choir trips out of state. The Joliet Journal even published my first short stories and editorials.
Later, while earning my bachelor’s degree in journalism, I was the Obituary Editor at The Tribune in San Luis Obispo, CA, and then a writer and co-anchor at News Talk 920, KVEC, also in San Luis Obispo. After graduating, I moved to the Bay Area and wrote for KCBS radio in San Francisco before switching to TV news. I have been writing and producing evening newscasts for fifteen years.
My teaching credentials begin at Saint Mary’s College of California, where I graduated with a Master's of Fine Arts in Creative Writing in 2010. I spent a year there as a teaching intern for two English writing courses: Composition, and Argument and Research. I also worked as a writing tutor, and acted as managing editor of the literary magazine Mary. Immediately after graduating I ltaught composition at San Jose State University for two years before making the hard decision to focus on journalism and my own creative writing more. That focus paid off in my memoir being accepted by Ooligan Press. Breaking Cadence: One Woman's War Against the War came out in 2019. In 2020 I returned to the classroom at Cal State East Bay, teaching journalism until the pandemic started to impact enrollment. In 2022 I started teaching Multimedia Reporting at Diablo Valley College where I also serve on the Journalism Department Advisory Board.
It's my hybrid background in journalism, creative writing and teaching that make me a versatile, fast and strong freelance business writer. I enjoy researching, interviewing, and weaving elements to tell unique and compelling narratives. Whether I'm writing about a new tech device or scripting speeches for annual conventions, I rely on storytelling, detail, finesse, and, of course, revision, to make sure clients are happy with every word. Companies I have worked for include Rodan + Fields and Eko Devices.
